Photography Workshop: Color and Shadow

February 16, 2019 @ 8:30 am - 5:30 pm

| $250

Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark, founded in 1880, holds a unique place in America’s history, as a Southern constructed, blast furnace in a newly-created city. Immerse yourself in the nation’s only 20th century industrial museum, located in Birmingham, Alabama, with your camera and your imagination. Walk among the steel behemoths and work yards, now silent, and photograph a world that was actively producing 25% of our nation’s iron, a century ago. Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark is offering a unique opportunity for photographers, with four, 1-day, photographic workshops in 2019, taught by Meg McKinney, a professional photojournalist.

This workshop will focus on ‘Color and Shadow’ – What’s in the shadows at Sloss Furnaces? Bring your camera and your eye to see shadows among larger-than-life structures as a creative force, while discovering colors in an historic, industrial setting.

Required: Participants are required to photograph with a DSLR camera, able to walk on uneven ground, carry their own photography equipment, walk up and down stairs. A tripod, a variety of lenses, and laptop for downloading images, are recommended.

Participants must be minimum of 18 years of age. Workshop is for participants only, no models, or guests allowed. No drones permitted.

Experience Level: Confident beginner to experienced photographer.

Instructor: Meg McKinney is an experienced photojournalism teacher (Samford University), and will lead participants through out the day. Meg’s professional background includes staff news photographer at Texas dailies, staff photographer for Southern Living magazine, and an M.A. in Journalism, University of Missouri.
