Tours
To schedule a guided group tour, contact Heather Guy- Education Coordinator, at (205) 324-1911 or hguy@slossfurnaces.com. Visitors will watch a video that explains the history of Sloss Furnaces and its influence on the growth of Birmingham. In addition, visitors will be taken on a walking tour of the site. They will see highlights of Sloss, including: the Apron of the Furnace, the Stock Trestle and the Underground Railroad Line. Please allow two weeks advance notice of your tour date. You do not need a reservation for a self-guided tour or a cell phone tour.

Self Guided & Guided Tours

Take a self-guided or docent lead tour of Sloss Furnaces. Start with a ten minute video that gives visitors information on the history of Sloss and Birmingham. Then take a tour to the furnace, the underground railroad tunnel, and the blowing engine building. This is an unbelievable experience. See enormous machinery and equipment that was used at Sloss Furnaces until 1971. Hear about what it was like to work at a blast furnace. Reservations required- 2 weeks in advance for a guided tour during the week. Self-guided tours do not need a reservation.

Dates and Times
Self Guided Tours and Cell Phone Tours are available Tues.-Sat. 10am-4pm, Sun. 12pm-4pm, closed Mondays. These tours are free, however depending on your cell phone carrier, charges may apply.

Tour Duration
Guided tours last about 1 hour. Self Guided tours vary depending on visitor. Self Guided and Cell Phone Tour brochures are available in Sloss Museum store, suggested tour time is about 1 hour.

Weekend Guided Tours (Please call ahead for availability)
Guided tours are usually offered on the weekends at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm free of charge. We strongly suggest that you call ahead for availability. Museum staff is limited, so please call to confirm that a docent will be on staff that weekend. Please call 205.324.1911.

Week Day Guided Tours:
*Please note that a minimum of 15 people is required to reserve a week day guided tour and the cost is $2 per person. Scheduled Guided Tours are Tuesday-Fridays or other dates upon request and availability. Guided tour times begin at 10:00a.m. and the last guided tour is at 2:30 p.m. For best availablity week day guided tour reservations should be made two weeks in advance.

When You Call
Let us know the number of people in your group and the date and time you want to come. Have your calendar handy in case the dates are already filled.

Special Needs

Please inform us of any special needs, including language barriers, physical or learning disabilities, so that we can modify the tour to accommodate everyone.

Iron Pours
Iron pours are available in the Spring and Fall on Wednesday and on some weekends.  Iron Pour Fees are $16 per person. 1 FREE chaperone for every 15 paying students. Additional chaperones are $16 each. Deposit is due at reservation. Your reservation is not held until Sloss Furnaces receives your deposit. The full balance is due 2 weeks before your field trip to Sloss. You may pay the deposit and/or balance by check or credit card. Please make all checks payable to Sloss Furnaces Foundation. Please confirm your number of participants as you will be responsible for full payment of each reserved spot. Come Prepared
Get directions to Sloss and learn what to bring. Please wear close toe shoes when visiting Sloss Furnaces. Depending on the time of year, please dress comfortably since Sloss is an all outdoor museum.

Sloss & Vulcan Park Tours
Would you like to tour Sloss Furnaces and Vulcan on the same day? Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to set up this special tour. For groups less than 50 people, visit Sloss Furnaces then head to Vulcan for lunch and a guided tour. If you have a group larger than 50, we will split your group in half. Half of your group will tour Sloss first and the other half will tour Vulcan at the same time. Then your entire group can eat together at Sloss or Vulcan. After lunch the groups switch sites and tour again. This is a great opportunity to fit Sloss Furnaces and Vulcan visits in the same day.
