STOKIN’ RULES 2011

CONTEST ENTRY:

  • All applications are subject to review and acceptance by the Stokin’ the Fire Organization
  • Contestant cancellation. Cancellation must be in writing and at least 30 days before the event. The contestant will then receive a refund, less a $50 office fee.
  • If the contestant cancels within the 30 days prior to the event, the Stokin’ the Fire organization will determine refund if the cook site space is purchased by another team.

THE GATES:

  • Only cooks will be allowed in and out of the gates after festival hours. You must be wearing your cook team wristband to get in and out of the gates. And you may be asked to show an I.D.
  • No gates will be unlocked for vehicles except during OFFICIAL loading and unloading times- please do not ask.

QUIET TIME:

  • Quiet time shall be respected and adhered to by all contestants. Quiet Time is Friday midnight- 7am on Saturday. And Saturday midnight- 7am Sunday.
  • Those contestants not respecting Quiet Time may be asked to leave the premises.
  • YOU MAY PLAY MUSIC LOUD ENOUGH FOR YOUR COOKSITE ONLY. LOUD AND/OR OFFENSIVE IS NOT ALLOWED-PERIOD! RESPECT YOUR FELLOW CONTESTANTS.

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES:

  • Excessive use of alcoholic beverages may be grounds for disqualification.
  • Under no circumstances shall alcoholic beverages be distributed to the general public and/or minors.

BACKYARD CHICKEN/RIB/BEST BUTT CONTEST RULES:

  • Open Contest Categories are Chicken, Ribs and Butt.
  • Meat inspection time TBD. Once meat has been inspected it cannot leave the site. Plan to keep it on site/under ice after inspection.
  • You may not cook until the meat has been inspected.
  • You may cook with charcoal, wood, pellets or gas.
  • Grand Champion must cook in chicken/ ribs categories.
  • Combined total of scores from chicken/ribs category will determine overall grand Champion. Best Butt is not part of the grand champion tally.
  • GARNISH IS ALLOWED IN THE COMPETITION-PLEASE REVIEW THE GARNISH RULES ON THE KCBS WEBSITE!!!!
  • Stokin’ the Fire follows the Kansas City Barbeque Society’s open contest rules. (www.kcbs.us). These rules can be found at the KCBS website.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE BUTT CHAMPIONSHIP RULES:

  • We will have 1 winner for the People’s Choice.
  • No separate entry fee applies to the People’s Choice. And Sloss Furnaces will provide teams with one butt.
  • People’s Choice will be from 12:00-5:00 p.m. Saturday.
  • The competition will take place at a designated area on site. Cook teams will be assigned a turn in time for People's Choice.
  • You will be provided an aluminum container to place your pork butt meat in for the competition. A designated person from the Sloss staff will come by to pick up your cooked pork butt for the competition.
  • ”The People” will vote for their favorite team by placing $1 bill as their vote into the teams "ballot box". The team with the highest amount of dollar bills will be the people’s choice champion.
  • You must cook/ sample at least one butt if you register for the competition. If you do not cook/ sample the entire butt, you will be charged accordingly.
  • Teams must slice, pull or chop their entry before placing it in the aluminum container. Pork pieces must be no larger than bite-size.
  • Samples must be kept at 140 degrees Fahrenheit during the entire competition or your team will be disqualified.
  • Please note proceeds will benefit Sloss Furnaces and relief efforts from the April 27th tornadoes.

Sanitation & Health

  • No smoking in the cooking area.
  • Hands and cooking utensils must be washed and sanitized.

o There will be water and hand washing stations located around the site.

o There will also be a dish washing sink (3 compartment sink).

o Please bring anti-bacterial dish washing soap.

· Rubber gloves will be provided and are encouraged to be worn while preparing and serving.

· Meat and other perishable ingredients must be stored in a cooler under ice.

· Cooks are encouraged to where hats and pull back long hair.

  • Please keep your area as clean as possible. Dumpsters and trash cans are on the site, and trash will be collected periodically.
  • If beer is part of your recipe, do not pour a partially consumed beer in your competition meats or sauces.
  • Ingredients list for your People’s Choice Butts must be turned in at the time you pick up your butts. Only teams that have turned in their ingredients list will be eligible for prizes.
  • People’s Choice cooked samples and all competition turn-in samples including chicken, ribs and best butt must be kept at 140 degrees Fahrenheit or your team will be disqualified from the competition.
